In addition to his surgical and scientific
accomplishments, Professor Dr. Mehmet Haberal played a historic role in
developing the legal and regulatory framework governing organ transplantation
and donation in Türkiye.
- During the 1970s: Professor Haberal began collaborating with Turkish health authorities
and legislative institutions to establish a legal infrastructure
regulating organ donation and transplantation procedures nationwide.
- 1979: He contributed directly to the enactment of Türkiye’s Organ and
Tissue Transplantation Law, considered the country’s first official legal
framework regulating:
- Organ donation from living and deceased donors
- Organ transplantation procedures
- Ethical standards in organ and tissue transplantation
- Protection of patients’ and donors’ rights
- National organ donation programs
- Since the 1980s to the present day: He has continued leading
public awareness campaigns promoting organ donation in Türkiye and has
played a major role in increasing societal awareness regarding the life-saving
importance of organ donation.
These efforts have been instrumental in advancing
organ transplantation programs in Türkiye and improving their success rates
over several decades.
