Professor Dr. Mehmet Haberal is regarded as one of the
most prominent pioneers of modern medicine worldwide and a name inseparably
associated with the establishment and advancement of organ transplantation in
Türkiye and the region. Over more than five decades of medical and academic excellence,
he has built an extraordinary scientific and humanitarian legacy that
transformed the lives of thousands of patients and positioned Türkiye among the
world’s leading countries in organ transplantation and advanced surgery.
Professor Haberal was not merely a successful surgeon;
he was a visionary physician and humanitarian whose far-reaching perspective
enabled him to establish a comprehensive medical system encompassing treatment,
education, scientific research, academic development, and medical legislation.
His achievements have become an integral part of the history of Turkish and
global medicine.
Born in 1944 in the Turkish city of Rize, Professor
Mehmet Haberal began his academic journey at the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara
University, graduating in 1967. From the earliest stages of his medical career,
he demonstrated exceptional interest in surgery, driven by a profound passion
for saving lives and developing innovative solutions for complex and critical
medical conditions.
Following the completion of his medical training, he
traveled to the United States to pursue advanced training in surgery and organ
transplantation, where he worked at internationally renowned medical centers
and gained extensive expertise in kidney and liver transplantation as well as
burn surgery. During this period, he was exposed to the latest global medical
technologies and practices, later returning to Türkiye with an ambitious vision
to establish advanced organ transplantation programs in accordance with the
highest international standards.
Upon his return to Türkiye, Professor Haberal embarked
on a new era of medical leadership, dedicating his efforts to advancing the
field of organ transplantation, which was still in its infancy within the
country at the time. His contributions extended far beyond surgical practice;
he played a historic role in laying the legal and regulatory foundations
governing organ donation and transplantation in Türkiye and contributed
directly to the development of medical legislation that enabled the field to
flourish nationwide.
He also became widely recognized for founding Başkent
University, which evolved into one of Türkiye’s leading academic and medical
institutions, encompassing an extensive network of hospitals, medical centers,
and research facilities that provide advanced healthcare and education
according to international standards.
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Haberal
never limited himself to medical achievements alone. He remained committed to
educating and mentoring new generations of physicians, surgeons, and
researchers, firmly believing that the future of medicine depends on continuous
education, scientific research, and academic advancement.
