ACL Reconstruction

ACL Reconstruction

ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to treat a torn anterior cruciate ligament and restore stability to the knee joint. The goal of treatment is to restore knee stability and allow patients to return to normal activity.

What is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)? The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the main ligaments in the knee joint. It plays an important role in stabilizing the knee and preventing excessive forward movement of the tibia relative to the femur.

It is essential for maintaining knee stability during movement and sports activities.

Causes

ACL tears commonly occur due to:

• Sudden stopping while running
• Rapid changes in direction
• Improper landing after jumping
• Sports injuries such as football or basketball
• Accidents or severe knee twisting

Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

• Sudden knee pain
• Swelling in the joint
• Feeling of knee instability
• Difficulty walking or performing sports activities

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically includes:

• Physical examination of the knee
• Assessment of joint stability
• MRI imaging to confirm the tear and evaluate other structures

Treatment

In some mild cases, conservative treatment may be considered, but complete tears often require surgery.

The surgical treatment includes:

• Reconstructing the ligament using a tendon graft
• Performing the procedure arthroscopically
• Postoperative rehabilitation and physical therapy

Importance of treatment and rehabilitation

Proper treatment and rehabilitation help to:

• Restore knee stability
• Allow safe return to sports
• Reduce the risk of recurrent injuries

A Message to Patients

If you experience knee instability or injury during physical activity,
early medical evaluation can help diagnose an ACL tear and determine the most appropriate treatment.
