Balloon Valvuloplasty

Balloon Valvuloplasty

What is Balloon Valvuloplasty? Balloon valvuloplasty is a catheter-based procedure used to treat narrowing of certain heart valves.

During the procedure, a catheter with a small balloon is guided to the narrowed valve. The balloon is then gently inflated to widen the valve opening and improve blood flow.

This method can be an alternative to surgery in selected patients.

When is this procedure used?

Balloon valvuloplasty may be recommended in cases such as:

• Mitral valve stenosis
• Aortic valve stenosis in certain cases
• Some congenital valve narrowing conditions
• Patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory.

It generally involves:

• Inserting a thin catheter through a blood vessel
• Guiding the catheter to the narrowed heart valve
• Inflating a special balloon to widen the valve opening
• Assessing the improvement in blood flow

Benefits of Balloon Valvuloplasty

This procedure offers several advantages:

• Minimally invasive treatment
• Improved blood flow through the valve
• Relief of symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue
• Shorter recovery time compared to surgery

Is the procedure safe?

Balloon valvuloplasty is a well-established interventional cardiology procedure performed by experienced cardiac specialists.

A Message to Patients

If a heart valve becomes narrowed, balloon valvuloplasty may help improve blood flow and relieve symptoms, supporting better heart function and quality of life.
